She says she wants to live in a movie
I say I want someone else to stand behind me
And write it all down
'Cause I can't be bothered doing it myself
And I don't want the responsibility of proving its importance

Austin, TX

Just got back from a 5-day conference in Austin. I'd always heard great things about Austin, so I was really excited to check it out, and after just a couple days, I am so ready to move there. Such a cool city. How can you not love a place whose official motto is "Keep Austin Weird"?

I was really lucky in that I didn't have to endure that awkward alone-at-a-conference-in-a-strange-city scenario, as my friends Kurt and Carla drove up from Baton Rouge to help me explore.

Here are some photos from our adventures (mostly involving food).

From an avante garde hot dog place called "Frank" that we went to for lunch one day:

Awesome drink menu (I'm a big fan of Boylan sodas):

Kurt at Frank's (sign behind him says, "It seems to me that some people want champagne and caviar when they should have a beer and hot dogs.")

Carla gets angry without food.

My lunch, the "State Fair" -- brisket, onions, fried jalapenos on a Polish sausage. Good!

Creepy doll heads at an antique shop called "Uncommon Goods" (definitely the coolest antique shop I've ever seen; they had all kinds of crazy stuff and had it grouped in all different ways throughout the store - e.g., some sections just by color of the item, some by theme, some by time period, etc.)
I love that Carla's head is reflected in the mirror in this one. Yay for disembodied heads.
Dinner at Rudy's, the 2nd highest rated BBQ place in Austin, as judged by yelp.com (shoutout to my brother, who hates yelp). Yelp is the greatest and has never steered me wrong. This BBQ place possibly should have been rated #1, though. We got waaay too much beef brisket and St. Louis pork ribs (I think it was a lb. of each.) Also, the white bread accompanying the BBQ meal is apparently a Southern convention. It was standard at every BBQ place I saw down there.
Best creamed corn ever. And some beans which were good, but not as good as my mom's.

The remains...

Food comas for all...

My dinner the last night there, beef ribs at Ironworks BBQ. I always thought I liked pork ribs better, but these quickly changed my mind. Good beer, too.

There was another conference running alongside ours at the hotel. They were advertising for their next meeting in Biloxi with casino chips (kinda clever, I suppose), but no one seemed to be taking them. So I helped them out by grabbing a few every time I passed their table. Ended up with quite a collection.
